1800s
The start of the 19th Century saw the end of the perpetual war with France. Despite social turmoil from the Industrial Revolution, Britain continued to build an Empire. European powers competed to expand their influence leading to war with Russia over the strategically important Crimea. Over the century the Army transitioned from muzzle loading muskets to cartridge fed weapons and fought its first modern war in South Africa with bolt action rifles.
